SEO Agency Christchurch
Search engine optimisation, in plain English
Thinkroom is a Christchurch SEO agency based in Ferrymead, run by senior strategists who have built and sold businesses of their own, including our founder’s first company, started right here in Christchurch in 2003.
We do SEO the unfashionable way. Fix the foundations, publish content a real expert would put their name to, and measure what your rankings make you, not just where they sit. The point of all of it is organic traffic that turns into enquiries, not an online presence that just looks busy.
SEO, in one sentence.
Search engine optimisation is the work of making your website the best answer in Google’s search results when Christchurch people search for what you sell. Sound technical foundations, content that genuinely answers the question, and other sites vouching for yours.
AEO, in one sentence.
Answer engine optimisation is making sure AI tools cite your business when they answer, in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot.
And here is the part the hype leaves out.
Google has confirmed its AI features run on the same search index as normal results. There is no separate AI index to optimise for. If your pages are indexed, useful and trusted, they are already eligible to be cited. The two jobs overlap far more than the people selling AEO packages would like you to believe, and organic search is still where most buying journeys start.
Our SEO services for Christchurch businesses
We are not a full service everything shop, on purpose. Our SEO services in Christchurch run as one system under one senior strategist, for businesses across Christchurch and the wider South Island. Technical SEO and site health. Keyword research and on-page SEO, so your own pages never compete with each other. Content creation with a real point of view. And the website design and user experience work that turns a ranking into an enquiry, because a visitor who cannot find your quote form was never going to become a customer. Where Google Ads makes the organic work cheaper, we run both. The point is to get found in local search by people who are ready to buy.
Digital Strategy Agency
Strategy first, always. We start with a three-hour session on your revenue streams, margins and where the leaks are, because you cannot optimise a business you have not understood.
YouTube SEO Agency Service
Video is a search surface of its own, and it feeds the AI engines too. We optimise your channel so it earns views rather than buying them.
Local SEO Service
Your Google Business Profile, reviews and map pack visibility. This is where Christchurch buying decisions actually get made.
Affordable SEO Services
What is included at each level and how we scale the work to your size. Affordable does not mean skipping the foundations, which is what cut-price packages actually sell you.
Backlinking & Outreach
Links earned from sites that genuinely count, never bought lists. Inauthentic mentions are the new bought backlinks, and they end the same way.

Why Kiwis do not trust SEO companies, and why we agree with them
Ask around any NZ business forum and you will find the same two words attached to our industry: cowboys and snake oil.
Template audits that “prove” your website is broken. Reports full of activity and empty of results. Lock-in contracts that keep billing whether anything works or not. An account manager you have never met, if there is one at all.
That reputation was earned, just not by everyone. The best SEO agencies in Christchurch survive it by being provable.
Four questions that sort the good from the rest.
Ask these before you spend a dollar, with us or with anyone.
- Ask what the work will make you, not what it will include. A real SEO plan is priced against revenue, not deliverables.
- Ask who, by name, will run your account, and whether that person has ever run a business of their own.
- Ask to leave. If the contract will not let you, you have learned everything you need to know.
- Ask them to explain one thing in plain English. If the answer is jargon, the reports will be too.
We built Thinkroom to pass those four tests. Senior strategists only, never juniors. No lock-in contracts, we keep clients by results. And we will tell you when something is snake oil, even when it would have been easy money to sell it to you.
What you do not need to buy
The AEO gold rush has produced confident-sounding advice that Google has directly knocked down. Before someone in a nice suit sells you these, here is what Google’s own documentation says:
- A special “llms.txt” file for AI. Google says AI-only text files do not help your visibility or rankings.
- “Chunking” your content for robots. There is no special robot-friendly writing style. Write clearly for humans and the engines follow.
- Schema markup as the price of AI visibility. Structured data has its uses, but no schema is required to appear in AI features.
- Buying “mentions” across the web. Inauthentic mentions are the new bought backlinks. Same trick, same ending.
The same honesty applies to the old stuff. Link building still matters when the links are earned, and an SEO audit is worth paying for when a human reads the output. The cheapest way to do AEO is to do SEO properly.
An SEO company in Christchurch with real roots
We will be straight about who we are, because in this town that matters.
Where we came from.
Thinkroom is a digital marketing agency that began in Australia, and our founder Ash Horton started his first business here in Christchurch in 2003, a digital printing company he grew, franchised and sold.
Who runs Christchurch.
Our branch in Ferrymead is led by Martin, Christchurch born and bred, a senior strategist who runs his own client book from this city.
Our New Zealand clients are not a flag of convenience.
We work with Christchurch businesses across plumbing, furniture, tyres and finance, including some of the South Island’s established lenders. We help Christchurch businesses the way we would run our own, because we know the Christchurch market from inside it. When you deal with us you are dealing with people who know the difference between Riccarton and Rolleston, and who have sat where you sit, as owners.
Compare us against the others.
If you are weighing up SEO Christchurch agencies, or any of the other SEO companies in Christchurch, we are happy to be one of the quotes you compare rather than the only one you hear. Most of the companies in Christchurch we work with talked to two or three of us first.
Who we are for.
We specialise in established service, trades and B2B businesses, $1M to $10M turnover, with nobody internal owning marketing. If that is you, you do not need an enterprise retainer. You need the foundations done properly, expert SEO content a real strategist would stand behind, and someone who answers the phone when you call. That is the job.
How we work
It starts with a three-hour strategic meeting. Revenue streams, margins, personas, what is leaking. A real marketing strategy starts with understanding the business, and most agencies skip this part entirely.
Foundations first. Taking over an account, we re-check site architecture, keyword hierarchy and the customer journey before touching anything else. When a printing franchise came to us after a failed agency run, fixing the skipped foundations lifted revenue 13% in 60 days.
Senior strategists only. The person running your SEO has built and run businesses. Your account is never handed down the line to someone learning on your budget.
AI as a power tool, not a replacement. We use premium tools and multi-model AI workflows daily, driven by senior people who know which questions to ask and check what comes back. What we never do is paste your business into a chatbot and publish whatever falls out.
Reports you will actually understand. Every month we walk you through what moved, what it made you, and what happens next, in plain English. Data-driven does not have to mean unreadable. No mystery dashboards, no vanity metrics.
No lock-in contracts. We keep clients by results and relationship. Our very first client, signed in 2014, is still with us and still referring.

Christchurch SEO results from New Zealand businesses
- Three NZ finance brands came to us spending heavily on ads. Fixing the search foundations and the customer journey let them cut spend while holding results.
- A Christchurch plumbing company gets its local work through the engine we built.
- A printing franchise grew revenue 13% in 60 days after we rebuilt the foundations a previous agency had skipped.
- Our first client from 2014 is still with us, unprompted proof that no lock-in works.
No screenshots of someone else’s traffic graph, no 2,000% claims with no context. Real businesses, real numbers, and we will happily introduce you.
The AI Search Visibility Audit
Want to know where you actually stand before spending a dollar? Our AI Search Visibility Audit answers five questions about your website:
- Can AI search find you? Indexing, crawler access and technical health.
- Can it understand you? Whether your pages state plainly who you are, what you do and where.
- Does it trust you? Expertise signals, reviews and consistency across the web.
- Will it cite you? Whether your content answers questions cleanly enough to be quoted.
- Would it recommend you? How you show up when someone asks an AI “who should I use for this in Christchurch?”
You get a scored report, the priority fixes in plain English, and a walkthrough with a senior strategist. If the audit says your SEO foundation is solid, we will tell you that too.

What does SEO cost in NZ
Our engagements start from around NZ$1,790 a month and scale with the size of your business and the competitiveness of your market. You are not paying Auckland agency overheads, and SEO is part of the growth engine we build, so we shape it around your goals rather than selling it off a shelf.
Two honest things about price.
One, SEO compounds. It builds month on month and keeps working when a paid campaign would have stopped the day the budget ran out. Judge it on a fair window.
Two, the cheapest quote is usually the most expensive. You will see SEO advertised in New Zealand from a couple of hundred dollars a month. At that price the foundations get skipped, the gap gets hidden behind glossy reports, and you pay twice when someone has to redo it properly.
SEO agency FAQs
How much does SEO cost in NZ?
Most NZ agencies charge between a few hundred and several thousand dollars a month depending on scope and competition. Very cheap packages usually cover software-generated reports rather than real strategic work. Our engagements start from around NZ$1,790 a month, and we will tell you honestly if your market does not justify that spend.
How long does SEO take to work?
Successful SEO shows movement inside three to six months, longer in very competitive markets. Christchurch is genuinely winnable for most local services, the competition here is real but thinner than Auckland. SEO success compounds into sustainable growth, and it does not vanish when you pause spending.
How much does an agency charge for SEO compared with doing it myself?
You can do the basics yourself, and for a very small business that is sometimes the right call, Google’s own documentation is free. The catch is time and compounding mistakes. A wrong keyword hierarchy or pages competing with each other cost more to unwind than to set up properly. If you want to DIY, a decent digital agency should point you in the right direction anyway, and we genuinely will, over a coffee, rather than watch you buy a $99 package that makes things worse.
Is SEO dead or evolving in 2026?
Evolving, and faster than usual. AI answers are built from indexed, trusted web content, so the SEO strategies that win citations are the same ones that win rankings. Opting out of SEO now means opting out of both result types at once.
What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimisation) is the practice of making your content the answer AI tools cite, in Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and similar. It works alongside SEO rather than replacing it, because both run on the same index of the web.
Can you guarantee me number 1 rankings?
No, and nobody honestly can. Google does not sell guaranteed positions and neither do AI engines. Anyone guaranteeing rankings is telling you something important about everything else they will promise. What we can show you is our method, our results for New Zealand businesses, and monthly numbers you will understand.
How do you handle Google updates and algorithm changes?
Calmly, and usually by doing nothing sudden. Sites built on real foundations and genuine expertise tend to hold through updates, because that is exactly what the updates reward. When something does move we work out what changed before we touch anything, and we tell you what we found even when the answer is that we are still watching. The agencies who panic after every update are usually the ones who took shortcuts before it.
How often will I get reports, and will I understand them?
Every month, and yes. We walk you through what moved, what it made you, and what happens next, in plain English rather than a dashboard link. If a number went backwards we say so and tell you what we are doing about it. Reports that list activity without connecting it to leads or revenue tell you nothing useful, and we are not going to send you those.
When is SEO not the right first move?
If your business is brand new and still proving its model, or your website cannot convert the visitors it already gets, SEO is not step one. Sending more traffic to a page that does not convert just costs you more to learn the same lesson. We have told plenty of owners to fix the offer or the site first and come back later. It costs us a sale occasionally. We are fine with that.
Does every business need SEO?
No. If you get all the work you can handle from referrals and repeat customers, you may just need a website that makes a good impression when someone looks you up. SEO earns its place when you want more work than your network brings you, or when you are competing for people who do not know you exist yet. We will tell you which one you are, even when the honest answer costs us the job.
Can you check where my business stands before I commit?
Yes. That is exactly what our AI Search Visibility Audit is for. It answers five questions about your website: can AI search find you, can it understand you, does it trust you, will it cite you, and would it recommend you. You get a scored report, the priority fixes in plain English, and a walkthrough with a senior strategist rather than a PDF that lands in your inbox and dies there. If the audit says your foundation is already solid, we will tell you that too.
What actually moves rankings?
Four things, in roughly this order. A site Google can crawl, index and load quickly. Content that genuinely answers what someone searched for, written by a person who knows the trade. Other credible sites and reviews vouching for you. And consistent, accurate details about who you are and where you operate. Everything else is detail on top of those four. Anyone selling you a secret fifth thing is selling you something else.
What does SERP mean, and does it still matter?
SERP means search engine results page, the page you land on after searching. It matters because it is no longer just ten blue links. A single Christchurch search can return a map pack, an AI Overview, People Also Ask boxes and ads before a normal result appears. Being on page one is not one thing any more, so we look at which parts of that page you can realistically own rather than chasing a single position number.
